Member App with Live Heart-Rate Zones for an Interval Training Franchise
Let's Connect
Overview
What we built
A 22-location interval-training franchise ran class bookings, billing and heart-rate data through three disconnected systems that never talked to each other. We built the single member app that unified all three.
In plain terms: booking a class, paying for membership and seeing your heart-rate zones during a workout were three completely separate experiences at this 22-location franchise. Bookings lived in one tool, billing in another, and Bluetooth heart-rate straps fed data only to the wall screen in the studio, gone the moment class ended. Members had no single account view, no way to check a waitlist, and no record of a workout once they walked out the door, so front desks fielded constant queries just to answer questions the systems themselves could not.
We built one member app that unified class booking with transparent waitlists, membership billing, and live heart-rate zones, pairing with the BLE chest straps members already wore and streaming their zone data to the studio wall display during class, with a personalised post-class summary delivered within minutes. App adoption reached 82% of active members within 4 months, and front-desk booking and billing queries dropped by 44% across all 22 locations.
The Problem
Three systems, one member
Running a member experience across three disconnected systems meant a simple question, like whether a class had space or whether a payment had gone through, required checking a different tool depending on what was being asked. Members had no single account view that pulled bookings, billing and workout history into one place, so front desks became the connective tissue between systems that should have been talking to each other.
Heart-rate data was the clearest casualty. Bluetooth straps streamed live zone data to the wall screen during class, giving the room a shared view for the length of the workout, but that data went nowhere once class ended. A member who trained hard had no record of it afterwards, no post-class stats, and no way to track zones or effort over time.
Waitlists compounded the frustration. With no visibility into where they stood, members called or messaged the front desk to check, and the same booking and billing queries repeated across all 22 locations every day, consuming staff time that should have gone to the studio floor rather than the phone.
Three disconnected systems
Class bookings, membership billing and heart-rate data lived in three separate tools that never shared information, so no one had a full picture of a member.
No account view
Members had no single place to see their bookings, billing status or workout history, leaving every question to be answered somewhere else.
Workout data vanished
Heart-rate zone data reached only the in-studio wall screen during class and disappeared the moment the session ended, with no post-class record kept.
Constant front-desk queries
Booking and billing questions, including simple waitlist checks, landed on front-desk staff across all 22 locations instead of being answered by the systems themselves.
What it was costing them
Every disconnected system was a question a member could not answer for themselves, and every one of those questions became a phone call or a queue at the front desk across all 22 locations. Workout data that could have kept members engaged between visits vanished at the end of class instead, and waitlist uncertainty pushed people toward calling rather than trusting the booking tool.
The Solution
Unified member app platform
We built a single member app that replaced the three separate systems with one place to book a class, manage billing and see live heart-rate zones. Class booking came with a transparent waitlist, so members could see exactly where they stood rather than guessing or calling the front desk to ask.
The app pairs directly with the BLE chest straps members already wore, streaming zone data to the studio wall display during class just as before, but now also capturing it for the member afterward. A personalised post-class summary, covering time in each zone, calories and streaks, arrives within minutes of the final interval, turning a workout that used to vanish into something a member can look back on.
Membership billing sat inside the same app as bookings and heart-rate data, so a member checking their next class could see their account status in the same view, closing the gap that used to send every billing question straight to the front desk.
Key decisions
One app, three systems unified
Class booking, membership billing and heart-rate zones moved into a single app, replacing three separate tools that never shared information with each other.
Transparent waitlists
Waitlists became visible inside the app, so members could see exactly where they stood instead of calling the front desk to check.
Pair with existing chest straps
The app pairs with the BLE chest straps members already wore, so no new hardware was needed to bring heart-rate data into the app.
Capture zone data after class
Zone data now streams to the wall display during class and is also captured for the member, replacing data that used to disappear the moment the session ended.
Fast post-class summaries
A personalised summary of zone time, calories and streaks arrives within minutes of the final interval, giving members a record they never had before.
Measurable Impact
What changed after launch
App adoption reached 82% of active members within 4 months of rollout, and 68% of attendees opened their post-class workout summary within 24 hours, showing that members wanted the workout record the old wall-screen system never gave them.
Front-desk booking and billing queries dropped by 44% across all 22 locations as members answered their own questions inside the app. Members attending 3 or more classes per week grew from 19% to 31% in 6 months, a sign that visible progress and transparent waitlists kept people coming back more often.

Tech & Tools Used
What powered the build
Every tool below earned its place in this engagement. Here is the part each one played.
React Native
Built the single member app for iOS and Android, bringing class booking, billing and heart-rate zones into one interface across all 22 locations.
Node.js
Ran the backend API tying bookings, billing and heart-rate data together, replacing the three separate systems members used to depend on.
Socket.IO
Streamed live heart-rate zone data from paired chest straps to the studio wall display in real time during class.
PostgreSQL
Stored member accounts, bookings, billing records and workout history, giving the app the single account view members never had before.
Redis
Held the live queue and waitlist state, keeping transparent waitlist positions accurate as bookings and cancellations came in.
Bluetooth LE (Heart Rate Profile)
Connected the app to each member's existing chest strap, pulling heart-rate zone data without any new hardware.
Stripe Billing
Handled membership billing inside the same app as bookings, closing the gap that used to send billing questions to the front desk.
Firebase Cloud Messaging
Delivered the personalised post-class summary notification within minutes of the final interval finishing.
Mixpanel
Tracked adoption and summary open rates, the data behind measuring how many members engaged with their new post-class stats.
